Always have a written agreement that clearly identifies the terms of the work and compensation. Whether you are hiring someone to do a job, or taking a job/gig, you need to make sure that you understand whether you have an employee or a self-employed contractor agreement.
If, for example, you think you have a contractor agreement and it turns out that you should have had an employee agreement, then an employee benefits back payment is in order. It all revolves around a set of rules set out here by Revenue Canada. Similar rules exist in other countries.
